Bobcat Softball Extra Innings Draws Sparks
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Georgia College softball team (13-4) won its third Mid-South Classic Tournament contest, this time against Lincoln Memorial University (11-3) Saturday morning at Tiger River Field to up their winning streak to six games. Junior Mikayla Sparks (Macon, Ga.) entered the game in the bottom of the 10th inning at the plate and knocked in sophomore Abi LeRoy (Dublin, Ga.) for the 5-4 win.
It was the second game in a row that the Bobcats knocked off a team with just two losses. Lincoln Memorial entered the game with wins over two top-25 teams. This time the contest would go back and forth with each team on the verge of victory.
The Railsplitters got two hits in the first inning, but could not score. The Bobcats went up 2-0 in the third inning when sophomore Becca Olson's (Evans, Ga.) sacrifice fly scored junior Kristen Humphries (Columbus, Ga.) and LeRoy's double brought senior Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) across the plate.
Lincoln Memorial responded with a big three-run fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Bobcats looked like they were going to put the game away in the sixth scoring a couple runs to retake the lead, but they left three men on base which opened the door for the Railsplitters to send the game to extra innings with a run in the seventh.
In the sixth, sophomore Taylor Campbell's (Warner Robins, Ga.) single to centerfield scored senior Emily Hammond (Gainesville, Ga.), while Humphries' single to leftfield brought in junior Natalie Lampert (Marietta, Ga.).
Both teams had chances in the extra innings, but it wasn't until Sparks was inserted at the plate that the Bobcats got the win.
Sophomore Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga.) and Flanders would split time at the mound, with the former getting the win in four innings of work.
Georgia College will conclude its participation in the 2014 Mid-South Classic with a 4 p.m. start against Lenoir-Rhyne University.
