MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (15-5) has now won eight of their last nine games by sweeping the University of Mount Olive (9-15) in a doubleheader at the Peeler Complex Tuesday. The Bobcats took the opener 5-2 before finishing off the Trojans 6-2 in the nightcap.
The Bobcats own a nine-game home win streak, and are 10-2 at the Peeler Complex this season.
In the first game, Georgia College came from behind with a pair of runs in each of their last two at-bats, while shutting down Mount Olive in their final four trips to the plate. In the second game, the Bobcats built a comfortable 6-0 lead with three two-run innings to cruise to victory.
Six different Bobcats recorded hits in Game 1. Seniors Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Whitney Horton (Acworth, Ga.), along with freshman Faith Flanders (Dublin, Ga.), sophomore Danielle Knight (Dudley, Ga.), junior Kristen Humphries (Columbus, Ga.) and sophomore Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins, Ga.) registered hits with the latter four also getting one RBI apiece.
In the second game, Lewis went 3-for-4 and Flanders 2-for-3 to account for five of the eight Bobcat hits. Sophomore Lacey Najafi (Suwanee, Ga.), Okvist and Humphries rounded out the hit parade, with the latter also adding a pair of RBI.
Sophomore Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga.) went the distance in the win (5-2), allowing six hits and two runs with three strikeouts and two walks.
Okvist, the current Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Player of the Week, scored three runs and added a pair of stolen bases in the second game. The senior, who currently leads the PBC in stolen bases this season with 21, now needs just five more to become the PBC's all-time stolen base leader. The current record is held by the University of North Carolina Pembroke's Danielle Peters at 144. Okvist entered this season with 119 stolen bases.
