GC Softball Squishes Newberry, 5-1 and 9-1

NEWBERRY, S.C. -  The Georgia College Softball squad (4-2) never trailed in a doubleheader sweep Friday at Newberry College (2-2), taking the two games 5-1 and 9-1.

In game one, the Bobcats took advantage of six errors from the Wolves, and got the second complete-game effort of the week from junior Becca Meade (Winder, Georgia). Improving to 2-0, Meade scattered nine hits and a walk for just one run, striking out five. The Bobcat newcomer didn't allow a single extra-base hit.

The Bobcats got one run in the fourth and four more in the sixth to account for all of their scoring. Georgia College had just five hits in the game, with third baseman Amber Coy (Warner Robins, Georgia) providing an RBI double, and catcher Haley Howell (Rochelle, Georgia) a sacrifice fly.

In game two, it was junior Kayla Price's (Indian Land) turn to offer up a gem in the ring, allowing just six hits and a single walk for one unearned run. She fanned six, improving to 2-2.

The Bobcats came out of the gate with a four-run first, including an RBI single from Deja Lester (Jacksonville, Georgia). Centerfielder Sarah Couch (Madison, Georgia) was a hitting star in game two, going 3-for-5 with a run. Catcher Jessica Hayles (Gordon, Georgia) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run and a double. Howell added two hits in three trips, scoring twice and plating another, while shortstop Baylee Hall (Hephzibah, Georgia) added a 2-for-4 game with an RBI and a run.

The Bobcats are back in action Thursday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. for the Georgia College home opener against North Greenville University.
