Bobcat Women’s Hoops Names Byrne Twins “Community Heroes”

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The women's basketball program at Georgia College & State University saluted their first joint "Community Heroes" when they named Alex and Anna Byrne Wednesday, Jan. 28 at the 64-52 win over Columbus State University.

In an effort to recognize those who are involved in outstanding community service in the greater Milledgeville area, periodically this season the Bobcats will honor a local hero during a game.

Milledgeville natives Alex and Anna Byrne are only 15 years old, but have been volunteering most of their lifetimes. Alex & Anna are currently freshmen at GMC Prep and have earned The Distinguished Order of the Servant Leader Award when they were in the sixth grade.

They both are great examples of what GMC strives for their students to be, having such strong, caring character. They have also earned the National President's Volunteer Service Award given to those who have performed over 100 hours of volunteer work within a 12 month period.

This spring they are starting to volunteer with Special Olympics to help with coaching and training of the spring sports and games.

The Jan. 28 honorees were invited to attend the game, meet the players, coaching staff and were acknowledged in a special ceremony. There will be more "Community Heroes" to come in the future.

To submit your "Community Hero" candidate contact women's basketball assistant coach Maurice Smith at maurice.smith@gcsu.edu or by phone at (478) 445-4010.
