Schaafsma Scores Career-High, GC Falters 72-47

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Freshman Belinda Schaafsma (Momence, Ill.) scored a career-high 11 points but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats (4-16, 2-9 PBC) fell 72-47 to the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern State University (14-6, 6-5 PBC) Saturday afternoon at the Centennial Center.
The Prairie State native knocked down five shots including the first three-pointer of her career en route to an 11-point showing. Schaafsma narrowly missed a double-double for the third-consecutive game, corralling a game-high nine boards while adding an assist, block and steal.
Going a perfect 8-for-8 (1.000) from the free-throw line was Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.), who finished with a game-high 18 points. She was 5-of-9 from the floor with six rebounds and a pair of assists.
The Hurricanes used a balanced scoring attack to methodically pull away from the Bobcats, placing four players in double-figures. The trio of Jessica Bivins, Terra Branch and Tania Walters scored 15 apiece, with Walters grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
GC cashed in at the charity-stripe where they shot 10-for-12 (.833) compared to 8-of-13 (.615) for Georgia Southwestern.
Unfortunately, the Hurricanes controlled nearly every facet of the game, out-rebounding the Bobcats 42-39 while also winning the turnover battle 21-16.
The 'Cats shot 17-of-58 (.293) from the field and 3-of-15 (.200) from three-point land as the Hurricanes shot 28-of-65 (.431) from the floor and 8-of-18 (.444) from beyond-the-arc.
The Bobcats will look to regroup against defending National Champion No. 5 Clayton State University Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 in the Centennial Center.
