GC Women’s Hoops Signs Hoosier State Guard

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College women’s basketball program and head coach Maurice Smith announced the signing of Tara Wornica Tuesday.

A graduate of Pike Central High in Petersburg, Ind., Wornica comes to GC after two seasons at Olney Central College, a two-year school in Olney, Ill.

“Tara has the potential to be an outstanding guard in our league,” Smith said. “She is a terrific play-maker who makes her teammates better. One of her best traits is her ability to get everyone involved on the offensive end of the floor. Tara will give us the ball handling and experience that we need at the point-guard position.”

An all-conference honoree for Olney, Wornica broke four school records for the Lady Knights, including points in a game with 41, and setting free-throw records for most made in a game and career.

Wornica helped head coach Clint Burris turn an 11-19 freshman team to a 21-12 record during her sophomore season at Olney.

The youthful Bobcats spent the 2011-12 season without a senior, and finished 4-22 with a 2-15 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) record. Freshman Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) became just the second PBC Freshman of the Year in school history, and added All-PBC Third Team honors as well. The Bobcats return 10 players from last year’s squad.

The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 11 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level. As a Division II program, Bobcat Athletics prides itself on balancing the life of the student-athlete, evidenced by the teams' multiple appearances in post-season competition as well as documented academic success and community-service involvement.
