MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College women’s basketball team finished up finals last week but couldn’t go on break from school yet, as the Bobcats had a road contest Wednesday, Dec. 14 at North Georgia. Rather than take the time for rest and relaxation, the GC women’s team helped out Tuesday at a local soup kitchen, Café Central.
The idea originated through Georgia College’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was passed along through SAAC women’s basketball team representatives Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) and Abby Slocumb (Suwanee, Ga.).
“We couldn’t think of a better way to spend the extra time after schoolwork and before Wednesday’s game,” said GC women’s basketball head coach Maurice Smith. “What Café Central does is such a great service for our community, but they need all the help they can get. We encourage others to find free time to help out with services such as these.”
Housed at Milledgeville’s Freedom Church on Underwood Road, members of GC women’s hoops helped prepare and serve the food to the underprivileged in Baldwin County, happy to give back to a community that has been so supportive of Bobcat Athletics.
The Bobcats host the Stair South Holiday Classic Dec. 30-31. Action begins Friday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m., as UNCP faces Limestone followed by the GC/Tusculum showdown. Saturday’s play is at 1 p.m., a UNCP/Tusculum faceoff with the GC/Limestone battle to follow.
Helping at Café Central is another example of the long line of community-service oriented projects Bobcat athletics has been involved with this year. GC has volunteered to help Boys and Girls Club children with their homework, gone Christmas Caroling through a local retirement home, raised money and awareness for Breast Cancer research, volunteered to rebuild a local elementary school playground, hosted free youth clinics and much more.
