Bobcat Women’s Basketball Opens Season with Win, 65-61

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Sparked by 20 points off the bench from senior Brandi McKinney (Cincinnati), the Georgia College women's basketball team (1-0) started the 2013-14 season with a win at the University of West Georgia (0-1) 65-61 Saturday.

The Bobcats are now 4-1 in their last five season openers, avenging last year's loss to the Wolves at home.

McKinney played 33 minutes off the pine, hitting 3-of-6 from behind the arc and all seven of her free-throw attempts for her second 20-point game in a Bobcat uniform. She added six boards, two assists and two steals for good measure.

Junior Enisha Donley (Loganville, Ga.) had 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) joined the duo in double digits with 11 points.

Senior Thresia Elskamp (Potosi, Wis.) had team highs with nine rebounds, four assists and five steals.

The Bobcats stumbled out of the gate, trailing 10-4 early. A short rally gave Georgia College a lead at 14-12 on a pair of free throws at the 11:35 mark. Georgia College took over for the remainder of the half, leading 34-24 at the break.

The Wolves chipped away, eventually tying the game 60-60 on a layup by Angela Davis. Donley made a jumper to put Georgia College up two, then the Bobcats iced it with free-throws.

The Wolves were led by 15 points and seven rebounds from Taylor Turgeon, flanked by 11 points from Seandre Lee.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Nov. 22 in tournament action at the University of North Georgia, battling Shorter College at 4 p.m.
