MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Led by 22 points from Shay Tarver (Covington), the Georgia College Women's Basketball team (13-7, 10-4 PBC) never trailed in a wire-to-wire 68-54 win over Georgia Southwestern State University (6-12, 3-11 PBC) Wednesday night at the Centennial Center.
A suffocating Bobcat defense held the Hurricanes to only three points in the first quarter as Georgia College jumped out to a 12-3 lead. It was the last time the Bobcats' advantage would be less than a double-digit one. Georgia College headed to the locker room up 35-20 and cruised the rest of the way.
The Bobcats went 24-of-50 from the floor while holding the Hurricanes to just 29.2 percent shooting. Georgia College also dominated inside, outscoring Georgia Southwestern 40-22 in the paint.
Tarver and Wright picked up their points with near-maximum efficiency. Tarver went 6-of-8 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the line while Wright made five of her seven field goal attempts and four of her six free throws.
Wright added nine rebounds to her box score to lead the way for the Bobcats. Tarver snagged five boards and dished out three assists.
The win is the sixth straight at home for the Bobcats this season. It also gives GC Women's hoops double-digit conference wins for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
Georgia College remains in third place in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) with the win. The top four teams in the PBC standings will host their respective conference tournament quarterfinals following the end of the regular season.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, Feb. 3 in Milledgeville as they welcome UNC Pembroke to the Centennial Center. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
