MACON, Ga. - The Georgia College & State University women's soccer team took the fight right to Division I Mercer University, ending in a 1-1 tie Monday night (Aug. 18) in an exhibition match.
Sophomore forward Kelli McLane (Lawrenceville, Ga.) tallied the tying score for the Bobcats in the 78th minute off a free kick.
Head coach Juan Pablo Favero was happy but thought the game still showed some need for improvement.
"I was pleased with our defensive effort and discipline in the first half as Mercer controlled the run of play. I was also proud of how we reacted mentally to their goal and we vested several quality chances including the very nice tying goal by Kelli. We still have a lot of work to do but I am very pleased with the attitude, effort, and coachability of our players."
The first half was controlled by the Bears, as Georgia College held off a strong attack and reached the mid-way point with no score.
Just 7:44 into the second half, Emerald Phillips broke the scoreless tie after a low cross from Vanessa Breslin.
The second half was a more balanced contest after the early goal. The ball spent much of the half in the middle of the field, instead on the Georgia College half.
With 12:41 left in the game, McLane blasted a free kick opportunity from 18 yards out to tie the game. McLane had a pair of goals and five assists in her rookie campaign a year ago.
Classmate Mary Rob Plunkett (Augusta, Ga.) got the start in net, making four saves in five chances over the first 75 minutes. She gave way to junior Megan Rothenberg (Knoxville, Tenn.) who made a pair of stops in her duty.
The exhibition season continues for Georgia College Saturday, Aug. 23 at 3:30 p.m. when they play at Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Bobcats open up the regular season with Belmont Abbey College at home Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
