Georgia College Soccer Drains Chargers, 3-0

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Georgia College & State University soccer team (3-0-1) rolled over the University of Alabama Huntsville (2-3-0) in a 3-0 shutout today.

The Bobcats scored early in the first period with a goal by senior Hayley Ferrell (Hampton, Ga.) in the 14th minute. Ferrell's third goal of the season came off assists from junior Jamie Nevin (Grovetown, Ga.) and freshman Leah Frazer (Mississauga, Canada). The assists were Nevin's fourth for the season and Frazer's second.

Defensively, Georgia College's Mary Rob Plunkett (Augusta, Ga.) snagged three saves in the first half. After the first shot on goal got by her, Alabama-Huntsville's Bethany Ensley ended the half with two saves.

The Bobcat defense held off the Chargers, allowing only one shot in the second period. After spending 79:32 in the net, Plunkett was relieved in the second half by Megan Rothenberg (Knoxville, Tenn.). Rothenberg managed to save one Charger shot during her 10:28 of play. For Alabama-Huntsville, Ensley grabbed three more goal attempts, giving her five saves for the day.

GCSU's second goal came in the 54th minute, by freshman Megan McAlpin (Newnan, Ga.). McAlpin's first goal of the season came off a give and go from senior Mary Byrne (Lawrenceville, Ga.), her first assist of the season. Ferrell's fourth goal of the season and second of the game was during the 71st minute. She hit a low angle shot from the base line for her unassisted goal.

After allowing two goals in the second period, Rachel Marsicano gave Ensley a rest after her 74:55 of game time. Marsicano snatched three saves during her 15:05 of play.

The Bobcats are on the road again Saturday, Sept. 20 in Pembroke, N.C. against #13 UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m. Georgia College's next home game is Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. facing Erskine College.
