MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College & State University (4-1-1, 0-1 PBC) soccer team grounded the Erskine College Flying Fleet (1-7) tonight (Sept. 23) 6-0 at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats dominated offensively tonight by out-shooting the Flying Fleet 31 to 3. Erskine's three shots on goal came in the first period and goalkeeper Mary Rob Plunkett (Augusta, Ga.) managed to snag all three. Plunkett, the six-foot sophomore, saw 45 minutes of game time tonight. Erskine's Jordan Lawson had five saves in the first period.
Senior forward Hayley Ferrell (Hampton, Ga.) scored the first goal of the night during the ninth minute. The goal was her fourth of the season and came off an assist by Kayla Emerson (Fayetteville, Ga.). At 13:16, Ally Treat (Fayetteville, Ga.), a strong defender for the Bobcats this season, proved to be a double threat tonight getting her first goal of season. Sophomore Kelli McLane (Lawrenceville, Ga.) scored the last goal of the first half and her first goal of the season with assistance from Ferrell and Emerson.
In the second period, Kristen Moore (Newnan, Ga.) replaced Plunkett and also put in 45 minutes. Lawson tacked on four more saves in the second half giving her nine for the night, with a complete game effort.
Junior Jeni Day (Marietta, Ga.) kicked off the Bobcat scoring for the second period with her first goal of the season at 78:25. Day's goal was unassisted from individual effort off a deflection. Sophomore Jessica Newland (Hiram, Ga.) also netted her first goal of the season tonight. Newland's goal came off a great effort by Lauren Hall (Richmond Hills, Ga.), her first career assist. The last goal of the night came in the 83rd minute by Day, her second goal for the night. Newland sent Day a cross-field pass from the deep left side, giving Newland her second assist of the season.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Sept. 26 in Asheville, N.C. as they take on Mars Hill College at 7 p.m.
