GCSU Soccer Edged 1-0 at #20 Armstrong Atlantic

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Battling the top team in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Standings, Georgia College & State University soccer (5-5-3, 1-1-2 PBC) lost by the slimmest of margins, 1-0 today (Oct. 7) at No. 20 Armstrong Atlantic State University (10-1-2, 6-0 PBC).

A first-half goal in the 19th minute held up in the defensive battle. A diagonal ball from freshman Emily Cattanach found Erin Holt on the right side of the field, just shy of the box, and her strike went into the upper 90, putting the Pirates on the board with an early 1-0 lead.

GCSU's best chance to knot it up in the first half came on a corner kick when Kara Teresi's (Tampa, Fla.) header went just wide of the far post in the 33rd minute.

The Pirates controlled the first stanza, firing 10 shots to the Bobcats' three. The second-half numbers evened out some as the game got more defensive, but AASU led again 7-4. Georgia College's last chance to score the equalizer came on a Jessica Newland (Hiram, Ga.) shot just wide in the 75th minute, but then the Pirate defense clamped down, not allowing the Bobcats another shot in the final 15 minutes of the match.

Reigning Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Goalkeeper of the Week Mary Rob Plunkett (Augusta, Ga.) was nearly perfect, stopping seven of eight shots. AASU netminder Tracey Mitchell picked up the two-save shutout, her first of the season.

The loss keeps the Bobcats at five points in the conference standings, holding solid in fifth place.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m., traveling to Clayton State University.
