MARTINEZ, Ga. - Junior Jessica Binkowski (Cumming, Ga.) of the Georgia College & State University soccer team (6-5-3, 2-1-2 PBC) was named this week's Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. She is the second-straight Bobcat to pick up the honor this season.
Binkowksi had a tall order this week, to man-match the top two scorers in the PBC this season in consecutive games, and she shut them both down. It started with leading scorer Kristin Burton of No. 20 Armstrong Atlantic State University Wednesday. One away from the PBC career mark in goals, Burton recorded just four shots and no goals in the contest. Binkowski followed that up by taking on Cherie Sayon of Clayton and her 13 goals this year. Binkowksi held her in check as well, allowing just four shots, all in the first half, and none of which reached the Bobcat goalkeeper.
Binkowski is the first PBC women's soccer student-athlete to earn weekly honors at two different positions in the same season. The junior was honored as the first PBC Goalkeeper of the Week this year, after posting shutouts in her first two contests. She was filling in for a teammate battling an illness.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. when they travel to Flagler College.
