Bobcat Soccer Produces Two Shining GEMs
by Katie Parker, sports information graduate assistant
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Senior mass communication majors Kara Teresi (Tampa, Fla.) and Lyric Burnett (Douglasville, Ga.) of the Georgia College & State University soccer team (5-3-1) were selected to participate in this year's Georgia Education Mentorship (GEM) Program.
In the GEM program, Georgia College students are matched with leaders in fields such as business, education, politics, healthcare, law and industry. This year-long mentorship offers a direct connection between classroom knowledge and real world experience, and in doing so, provides an opportunity for the leaders of today and the leaders of tomorrow to work together to build a brighter future for our communities and our state.
Teresi's mentor will be Reggie Roberts, the Vice President of Football Communications for the Atlanta Falcons. Roberts is in his fifth season as the club's communications VP. He serves as the organization's spokesman while coordinating all of the media coverage for the team.
Fellow mass communication student Burnett will be paired with Karen Kaplan, General Manager and Senior Partner of Fleishman-Hillard, Inc.'s Atlanta headquarters. Fleishman-Hillard is an international public relations and marketing communications firm. The award-winning agency has more than 80 offices throughout North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America.
Being selected for the GEM Program is quite an honor as only 19 Georgia College students were chosen this year.
"Kara and Lyric perform well not only on the field but also off the field," said head coach Juan Pablo Favero. "This accomplishment is a testament to the caliber of their character as well. This isn't just an honor for the soccer team but also for the athletic department as a whole. They are both such great ambassadors for the school as student-athletes."
Teresi and Burnett are back in action Sunday, Sept. 27 against the University of Tampa as they try to lead the rest of the Bobcats to another victory on the road in Savannah, Ga. The ‘Cats return home Saturday, Oct. 3 taking on conference opponent North Georgia at 4 p.m.
