GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Georgia College soccer team (0-1) got the 2011 season underway Friday night, taking a 2-1 hard-fought loss from No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne University (1-0) in the Tusculum Kickoff Tournament. Sophomore Taylor Yee (Johns Creek, Ga.) netted the first goal of the season for GC.
The Bobcats quickly found themselves in an 0-2 hole with just under 12 minutes left in the first half. Carley Griffin and Catherine Hauck put in the goals for Bears.
Yee found the back of the net with just two seconds left in the first half, as junior Jamie Colcord (Marietta, Ga.) sent a free-kick opportunity into the box that LRU keeper Caitlin Scruggs couldn't handle. It popped out to Yee, who fired it into the net.
Scruggs finished with four saves in five tries for the win, while Bobcat goalkeeper Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) stopped six shots. GC was out-shot 13-10 in the match.
The Bobcats take on Southern Indiana University Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. to finish out the tournament at Tusculum College.
