GC Soccer Drops Home Opener to Wingate, 2-1

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College women's soccer (1-2) opened up its home schedule Friday night with a defeat, falling 2-1 to Wingate University at Bobcat Field. The contest was game two of the 2011 Bobcat Shootout, as Nova Southeastern University outlasted Tusculum College 4-3 in double overtime in game one.

In a tightly-fought contest, the Bobcats struck first, as sophomore Brittaney Borror (Evans, Ga.) struck for her first goal of the season on a put-back of freshman Abby Dalton's (Macon, Ga.) shot. It was the first assist of the season for Dalton. The Bobcats led by a goal with 29:03 left in the first half.

Wingate answered back with two goals before the halftime buzzer, as AJ Lightbody finished off a pass from Brandi Baldwin from about 20 yards out, then the go-ahead goal came off the head of Jade Montgomery. Meaghan Barry found Montgomery off a free kick near the left corner.

The score would hold up, as neither team could find the net in the second half.

It wasn't from a lack of trying, however as junior Leah Frazer (Mississauga, Ontario) cracked off two deep chances that nearly tied the game late in the second half. The first was corralled with a leaping grab by Bulldog keeper Ashlyn Hardie and the second was knocked up into the crossbar by Hardie, then cleared after a rebound save with just over 10 minutes left.

Hardie finished with 10 saves in 11 tries for the win, while freshman Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) had four stops in the loss.

The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m. taking on Tusculum. NSU and Wingate square off at 11 a.m. in the final day of Bobcat Shootout action.
