GC Soccer Falls at Lander Late in Thriller, 1-0
GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Georgia College women's soccer team (3-6, 2-1 PBC) held their own against a stingy Lander University squad (7-1-1, 2-1-1 PBC) Wednesday night, equaling the Bearcats through 90 minutes before surrendering a goal in the 96th minute to fall, 1-0.
Lander's Sarah Piechocki executed on a penalty kick just over five minutes into the extra period.
Despite the loss, GC performed exceptionally well in their second Peach Belt Conference (PBC) contest away from home, the loss snapping a two-game conference win streak.
PBC Goalkeeper of the Week Taylor Cornelius (Dacula, Ga.) turned in a solid performance between the pipes, stopping all eight shots in regulation before coming up short on a penalty kick in overtime.
GC was out-shot in the game, mustering just seven compared to 19 from Lander. The Bearcats also dominated on corner kicks 6-0.
Head coach Hope Clark and her squad will have to bounce back quickly after the tough loss, as they head to Clayton State University (3-5, 0-3 PBC) Saturday, Oct. 1 to take on the Lakers at 5 p.m. The Lakers most recently faced North Georgia tonight.
