HICKORY, N.C. – Despite some solid defensive play, the 2012 season for Georgia College soccer (0-1) opened with a 2-0 loss at No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne University in day one of the L-R Classic.
A goal in each half did in the Bobcats, with the first strike coming in the 42nd minute. Hallie Hilliard controlled a loose ball at the top of the box and fired it home to give the Bears a 1-0 lead with just 3:20 left on the first-half clock.
The Bobcats came out firing after the halftime break, putting up four shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
It was LRU's Zara Walker who netted the only second-half goal, making it 2-0 off a pass from Leah Mullins with 13:21 remaining.
GC cracked off 14 shots, half of them on target as LRU goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs recorded the seven-save shutout. Sophomore Taylor Cornelius (Dacula, Ga.) took the loss.
The Bobcats were out-shot by a slim 19-14 mark. Sophomore forward Ashley Veilleux (Monroe, Ga.) tried four shots to lead the squad, as seven different GC players took chances at Scruggs.
The Bobcats have the day off tomorrow, finishing the L-R Classic with a match against Lees-McRae College (0-0-1) Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. Sunday's battle of the Bobcats will be the first meeting all-time between the two schools in women's soccer.
