MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The first home win of the young 2012 season was a thrilling one, as the Georgia College women's soccer team (2-2) toppled No. 8 Saint Leo University (1-3) 1-0 in the final day of the Bobcat Shootout Sunday at Bobcat Field. The win matches GC's highest-ranked victory in school history, beating No. 8 Armstrong Oct. 6, 2010.
A pair of sophomores hooked up for the win, as Abby Dalton (Macon, Ga.) took a pass from Erin Griffin (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and fired it off the leaping fingertips of the Lion goalkeeper for the second-half goal.
The first goal of the season for Dalton came in the 64th minute, as Griffin kept alive a loose ball from the right side of the box with a sliding effort to poke it toward Dalton's strong right leg.
Sophomore Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) was the beneficiary of strong defensive line play, as Saint Leo only let loose six shot attempts, just a pair coming on target. Stephens picks up her first shutout of the season and the third of her career. Defenders Jamie Colcord (Marietta, Ga.), Dixie Robinson (Conyers, Ga.), Olivia Holden (Fishers, Ind.) and Anna Barrow (St. Simons, Ga.) each played the full 90 minutes in the stifling effort.
The Bobcats out-shot Saint Leo 31-6. Lion goalkeeper Abby Evans was nearly up to the task, making 11 saves in 12 tries in the loss.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m., taking on Anderson University (2-1-1). The game is GC's "White Out" match, as the first 300 GC students get free T-shirts thanks to the Thunder Crew student spirit group.
