Bobcat Netters Open ITA Southeast Regionals

SUMTER, S.C. - The Georgia College & State University tennis teams began the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament Saturday, Sept. 27 with a strong opening day.

In the Flight ‘A' Singles bracket, Georgia College got two of its four submissions into the quarterfinals, as both top-seed Erick Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and No. 7-seed Francis Yoshimoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) picked up a pair of wins on day one. Siqueira faced a pair of conference foes in beating Augusta State University's Henrique Boturao (6-4, 6-3) and Francis Marion University's Mario Keick (7-5, 6-0).

Yoshimoto polished off Columbus State University's Nemanja Djuric (6-0, 6-1) before beating Limestone College's Philippe Hogan (6-4, 6-3). Both Giovane Nucci (Santa Catarina, Brazil) and Justin Pickham (Armidale, Australia) fell in the round of 32 after opening-round victories.

Making it to quarterfinal doubles in Flight ‘A' were the team of Pickham and Siqueira and the duo of Yoshimoto and Joao Casagrande (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The latter of the two beat a team from Pfeiffer University, while Pickham/Siqueira beat a USC Aiken doubles squad.

In the men's B-Draw singles, Casagrande worked his way into the quarterfinal round, taking a bye and beating Lincoln Memorial University's Graham Battle in a three-set marathon (5-7, 6-1,6-2).

On the women's side, senior Gabby Acuna (Peachtree City, Ga.) and sophomore Bertille Lion (Saint Cyr, France) were in A-Draw singles. Acuna fell in the first round, while Lion bowed out in the round of 32, beating Lander University's Vuokko Vahatalo 6-0, 6-3 in the opener before Columbus State's Viktorya Semyrodenko ended her day at 6-3, 6-0.

Acuna and Lion teamed in A-Draw doubles to the tune of an 8-6 win over CSU's Selma Hidass and Veronika Jasenovcova, moving into the quarterfinal round.

The tournament continues through Monday.
