MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Freshmen Kayla Barksdale (Martinez, Ga.) and Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) of the Georgia College & State University women's tennis team were named Co-GCSU Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sept. 27, the sports information office announced today (Sept. 29). This is the first such honor for both Barksdale and Lingner, and also the first for the women's tennis team this season.
Both players won singles titles and teamed for a doubles win at the Windstream/GCSU Fall Women's Championships this week. In singles action, Barksdale beat Lander University's Caitlin Fell 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to be crowned the winner of Flight ‘B' singles. Lingner took down teammate Linda Mosa (Stockholm, Sweden) 7-6, 6-2 in Flight 'C'. Then the duo captured the championship in 'B' Doubles. In the finals, Lingner and Barksdale blanked another University of Tampa Spartan duo of Molly Welsh and Ally Wooten 8-0.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, October 2 at the Chick-fil-A championships in Augusta, Ga.
