GC Tennis’ Johnson Chosen Capital One Academic All-District


MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The College Sports Information Directors Association recently released its 2012 Academic All-District in the at-large category, with Georgia College tennis junior May Johnson (Sydney, Australia) landing a spot on the 12-person list.

Johnson earned a spot on the District 3 list for Division II, including student-athletes from tennis, golf, fencing; gymnastics; ice hockey; lacrosse; rifle; skiing; swimming; volleyball; water polo; and wrestling in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC), South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas.

Owning a 3.86 GPA in art, Johnson is fresh off earning a spot on the PBC Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team as well.

Johnson was 13-5 in singles this season, including 6-1 in the second slot. She was also 10-11 in doubles action. She is the No. 15 singles player in the Southeast Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), and her GPA ranks fifth among the 12 student-athletes on the district list.

She now moves on to the national Division II ballot, with Academic All-American winners to be announced later this month.

The Bobcats have wrapped up a 2012 season that saw GC go 13-11, earn the No. 5-seed in the PBC Tournament, and eventually fall in the Southeast Region semifinal. The Bobcats a spot on the All-PBC second team in doubles and added a second team singles nod for Lisa Setyon-Ortenzio (Paris) as well. The GC women have now made 18 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The Capital One Division II and III Academic All‐America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011‐12 DII and DIII Academic All‐America® teams program.
