#19 Women’s Tennis Drops First PBC Match to #7 Columbus State, 8-0

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 19 Georgia College women's tennis team (2-2, 1-1 PBC) dropped its first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) match of the season Sunday, as No. 7 Columbus State University (3-0, 1-0 PBC) would take an 8-0 road victory in its first PBC game of the season.

In the first doubles slot, Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) and Katie Krupp (Evans, Ga.) battled Paola Cigui and Carolin Weikard but fell 8-4. May Johnson (Sydney, Australia) and Leah Pridgeon (Lawrenceville, Ga.) were paired together in the second slot and lost to Laura Chapman and Olivera Jokic 8-1.

Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) would come up just short in the third doubles slot, losing to Andrea Redrado and Renata Paiva 8-6.

Playing in the first singles slot, Marevic played Cigui, the No. 6 player in the nation. Marevic lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

Johnson and Barksdale also faced nationally-ranked players, with Johnson taking on against No. 42 Weikard and Barksdale dueling No. 47 Jokic. Johnson dropped her match against Weikard 6-3, 6-2 and Barksdale lost to Jokic 6-4, 6-2.

Both Pridgeon and Krupp took their matches all the way to the limit, as they each played to a tiebreaker before falling. Pridgeon lost to Chapman 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 and Redrado defeated Krupp 6-3, 6-7, 10-5.

The Bobcats will return to the courts Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. when they continue the PBC schedule, taking on No. 39 Flagler College.
