MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College women's tennis team (4-6) took on the Lewis University Flyers (3-2) during the Illinois school's spring break trip through Georgia. The teams were close throughout the afternoon, but the Bobcats finished on the losing end of the 6-3 score.
Senior Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) paired with freshman Katie Krupp (Evans, Ga.) in the first doubles slot. The Bobcat duo took on Zsofia Lanstiak and Zsofia Kranczicki. The Bobcats battled but lost 8-5.
The other senior and freshman duo for the Bobcats faired similarly. Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Sarah Murray (Alpharetta, Ga.) took on Kendra Mills and Jill Wetmore for the third doubles slot. The Flyers finished the close match on top with an 8-4 score.
May Johnson (Sydney, Australia) and Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) blanked the Flyers second doubles team, Megan Nguyen and Brianna Markgraf. The Bobcats got on the board with the 8-0 win.
The Bobcats entered singles play down 2-1. Marevic took on Lanstiak in the No. 1 singles slot, with Marevic losing 6-3, 6-1.
Krupp took on Wetmore in the No. 4 slot and got a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory to push the score to 3-2. Barksdale tied the score at 3-3 with a quick win in the No. 3 slot, taking down Nguyen 6-2, 6-0.
Johnson took on Kranczicki in the No. 2 singles position, but fell 7-6, 6-3 to give the Flyers a 4-3 lead with two matches left. Lingner took on Markgraf in the No. 5 spot. After Markgraf took the first set easily at 6-3, Lingner pushed but came up short in the second set at 7-5, clinching the team win for the Flyers.
Murray faced off against Mills in the No. 6 slot with the score already decided. Mills took the first set 6-0 and Murray answered with a 6-4 win of the second set. Mills finished strong with 6-2 win in the third set and the 6-3 victory over the Bobcats.
Georgia College returns to the court Monday, March 11 a 4 p.m. when they travel to Dahlonega, Ga. to take on the University of North Georgia.
