MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce its 2013 class for the Georgia College Athletics Hall of Fame. Next is Bobcat tennis’ Luiza Biktyakova.
Sister of fellow Hall of Famer Lilia, Luiza Biktyakova played two seasons for the Bobcats from 2002-2004 after transferring from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. A member of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Champions in 2003, she earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America status in each of her two seasons.
Luiza Biktyakova twice earned All-PBC status, and was ITA/Rolex Region Doubles Champion twice with two different partners. Her pairing with Mia Paavilainen earned the duo national runners-up as well in 2002. A testament to her abilities as the complete student-athlete, Luiza Biktyakova is Georgia College’s lone recipient of the ITA National Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, that coming in 2003. Named after the tennis great and humanitarian, the award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level for their skills in leadership and sportsmanship.
She went 18-10 in singles action as a senior, adding a 26-9 doubles mark. As a junior, she went 20-5 in singles and 17-11 in doubles. All told, she amassed 81 career victories and a .698 winning percentage.
Biktyakova will join previous inductees Jennifer Joiner from softball, Phil Arp, John Kurtz, Rusty Kea, Greg Winters, Keith Slocumb and Tom Gorman from baseball, Duward Whelchel, Julia Roudkovskaya, Anna (Haggkvist) Sundstrom, Jay Torrence, Nancy Groesch, Lars Lindblom and Lilia Biktyakova from tennis, Robert Williams, Leonard Scott and Julius Joseph from men's basketball, Sherita Ballard from women's basketball, David Robinson and Alex McMichael from golf, Missy (Thomas) Swicord and Yeini (Gutierrez) Thompson from gymnastics, broadcaster Scott MacLeod and former athletic director and golf coach Michael Peeler.
Luiza Biktyakova and baseball’s Chris Carr will be honored as part of Homecoming/Alumni Weekend Saturday, Feb. 23. They will be recognized at halftime of the men's game of a basketball doubleheader against the University of Montevallo and again at a formal ceremony in the Magnolia Ballroom, tentatively set for an 8 p.m. start.
