Women’s Tennis Posts Unblemished Day One of ITA Southeast Regionals
- The biggest fall tennis tournament got underway Friday
and the GC women’s tennis team impressed in their first
action of the year. All three competing Bobcats came away
victorious in their singles matches in day one of the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regionals.
Senior Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) started off the winning ways for the Bobcats. After taking a close first set 7-6, she would cruise to a 6-2 second set to get her first victory, topping Alex Ebner of Anderson University. Barksdale will continue her play in the ‘A’ Flight tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
Also playing in the ‘A’ Flight, Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) would start slow against Olivia Self from Converse College. The GC junior would lose the first set 3-6, and making the proper adjustments to her game to shut Self out the rest of the way; winning the second and third sets 6-0, 6-0. Marevic be back in action tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
Playing in the ‘B’ Flight and also in her first career collegiate match, freshman Katie Krupp (Evans, Ga.) defeated Lori Flick of Lander University, 6-3, 6-4. Krupp’s next match will start tomorrow at 8 a.m.
Barksdale and Krupp were back in action late Friday night as the two Bobcats faced off against the No. 6-seeded Mona Blauen and Julia Graf of Francis Marion University. The GC duo would fight, but were eventually overmatched 8-3.
Winner’s bracket singles action for Krupp, Barksdale and Marevic continues tomorrow.
