SUMTER, S.C. – The Georgia College Women's Tennis team completed play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Region Championship Sunday, advancing a doubles pairing as far as the semifinals.
In Flight A Singles, senior Jena Kelly (Lawrenceville, Georgia) split two matches today, topping Tusculum College's No. 5-seed Franziska Funke 7-6(4), 7-5 in the round of 16. Kelly then fell in the quarterfinals to No. 3-seed Lizanne Jinkertz from Flagler College 6-1, 6-2.
In consolation play, Valeria Lopez (Galicia, Spain) beat the University of North Georgia's Holly Bennett in a pair of 6-3 sets. Lopez then withdrew in the quarterfinal matchup.
In Flight B Singles, Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) topped Merye Gobernate of Augusta University 6-3, 6-1 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. There, she beat No. 4-seed Maria Puerta of Young Harris College, in a pair of 6-1 sets. Richter then withdrew from the semifinals.
In Flight A Doubles, Kelly and Lopez moved on to the semifinals by an 8-2 score over Fantine Botella and Chloe O'Connor of Emmanuel College. In the semis, the Bobcat pair ran into Francis Marion University's Marie Krueger and Elisa Lang, dropping an 8-6 bout.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Oct. 6 at the Mercer Gridiron Classic in Macon.
