GC Women’s Tennis Takes Thriller from Queens, 5-4

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College Women's Tennis (5-2) took down Queens University (4-1) 5-4 Friday in a crucial regional battle at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. The Bobcats took the Nos. 3-4-5 singles bouts to nab the win.

The Bobcats led 2-1 after doubles. In a ranked battle, No. 16 Jena Kelly (Lawrenceville) and Valeria Lopez (Galicia, Spain) beat No. 21 Yana Fleyer and Sasha Davidzenka 8-5. The Bobcat first singles pair is now 6-1 on the year. In the third slot, Emma Niemi (Cumming) and Paula Garriga (Barcelona, Spain) teamed for the first time this spring to beat Caroline Nielsen and Hannah Lehfeldt 8-6.

The second slot provided an 8-5 loss for Kristen Jones (Marietta) and Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) to Carlotta Nassi and Isabel Fornies.  

All but one singles result went the full three sets. Singles finishes came in first from the third slot, as the Bobcats took a 3-1 lead when Richter outlasted Davidzenka 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Richter has yet to fall in seven singles matches this season. Nassi upset No. 33 Kelly in the first slot 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Jones put the team one point away with a victory over Nielsen in the fourth slot, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.

In second singles, Fleyer edged Lopez 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Garriga then provided the team-victory clinching point with the only straight-set finish in singles for the day, 6-1, 6-4 over Lehfeldt. The Bobcat junior has been dominant in her first season, improving now to 7-0. Niemi came up short in a battle with Fornies in sixth singles 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 to close action.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, March 13 at 2 p.m., playing host to Emmanuel College.
