Destiche Leads Bobcat Women to Third Place Finish

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – With senior Dani Destiche (Snellville, Ga.) crossing the line seventh, the Georgia College & State University women's cross country team kicked off the 2010 season Friday afternoon, hosting the Bobcat Invitational and taking third place. Destiche ended her 5K race at 21:37.

Junior Karissa Ekstrom (Alpharetta, Ga.) was 10th in 21:56, while classmate Sarah Balkcom (Fayetteville, Ga.) took 12th at 22:09.

A pair of freshmen rounded out the team's top five, as Andrea Byrnes (Snellville, Ga.) was 19th (23:13), and Allison Lones (Kathleen, Ga.) took 20th in 23:21.

The Bobcats picked up 83 team points, with Peach Belt Conference (PBC) rival Augusta State University taking the team championship at just 32 points. SCAD had the individual medalist in Hannah Lieberman, breaking the tape in 20:13, just three seconds ahead of teammate Sarah Caskey.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Sept. 18 at the RunFit Invitational in Macon, Ga.
