Milledgeville, Ga. (Jan. 3, 2012)— Last season, the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) rivalry between Georgia College and Augusta State University was dubbed ‘Battle of the Cats,’ in reference to the two universities respective mascots, the Bobcats and the Jaguars. This year, the two teams will meet again in Milledgeville on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Georgia College’s Centennial Center.
As with any rivalry, there must be close competition between the two teams. Last year, the men’s game came down to the wire, but the Bobcats were able to defeat the then No. 7 Jaguars 73-69.
“This is a relatively new rivalry, but has quickly built a lot of interest,” said Patrick Gamble, former Thunder Crew President. “We hope the ‘Battle of the Cats’ will become a renown tradition for years to come.”
The reigning PBC Men’s Champions, ASU will visit the Centennial Center for another well-anticipated game. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30. Prior to the match-ups, support from Hutchinson KIA will provide entertainment for fans through an organized tailgate coordinated by the Georgia College Thunder Crew, the University’s athletics student spirit group.
Previous support from KIA was in the form of a $5,000 check. With support from KIA again this year, Thunder Crew plans on spending it in the same area.
“We spent the money on a band and free merchandise for all the fans,” said Allyn Harris, Thunder Crew Tailgating Officer. “The support from KIA really helped amplify the rivalry.”
The tailgate will start at 4:30 p.m. in the Centennial Center parking lot, and is open to all fans. Spectators can look forward to a live band as well as thousands of dollars worth of free merchandise. In addition, Sodexo will provide hot chocolate.
“Last year, we had around 1,000 people show up for our tailgate and that energy transferred into the game,” Gamble said. “The anticipation of this year’s battle is killing me.”
Founded in October 2009, Thunder Crew at GC is a student-led atheletic marketing organization, looking to promote and enhance atheltic loyalty and experiences amongst all students, faculty, and fans of Georgia College.
