Bobcats Out-Duel Lady Canes in Game One, Drop the Second

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (8-25, 3-3 PBC) used an early barrage of runs paired with a solid pitching performance to knock-off the Georgia Southwestern State University Hurricanes (13-19, 3-7 PBC), 5-1 in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader. The Bobcats fell 9-7 in the second.

GC got things going right away, rattling off four consecutive hits to start the game. Freshman Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) and senior Kati Pickowitz (Keller, Texas) led off with back-to-back singles before high school teammates Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) and Anna Parker (Columbus, Ga.) belted a pair of doubles.

The 'Cats would tack on two more in the bottom of the second to go along with the three scored in the first. Georgia College out-hit Georgia Southwestern 12-3 in the 5-1 win.

That is all the scoring GC would need, as junior righty Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) threw a one-run complete game to pick up her fifth win of the season (5-10). Chandler's lone run was unearned as she scattered only three hits and struck out three.

The Bobcats did a great job rallying in game two after finding themselves in a quick hole after the first frame. Georgia Southwestern used four hits to score six runs in the bottom half of the first.

Trailing 8-2 heading into the top of the fifth, GC used some scrappy at-bats along with a Lauren Potts (Gray, Ga.) single to score four runs and close the gap to just two.

Unfortunately, Georgia College could only muster one more run the rest of the game eventually dropping the contest 9-7.

Junior Caitlin Duvall (Douglasville, Ga.) came in relief in the first inning and kept the Bobcats alive throughout. She allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings of work.

The Bobcats remain right in the thick of things in the Peach Belt Conference race at 3-3 and return home to take on Augusta State University (17-7, 0-0 PBC) Thursday, March 17 beginning at 4 p.m.
