MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Softball team (2-2) finished off the 2019 Bobcat Kickoff with a doubleheader sweep of Albany State University (0-4) Sunday at the Peeler Complex, 4-1 and 9-1.
Game one was a battle, as sophomore Jessie Morris (Vidalia) allowed just one earned run on seven hits, fanning eight in the complete game.
The Bobcats scored in the first, but ASU answered right away in the top of the second. A two-run bottom half put Georgia College back in front. Senior Kayla Price (Indian Land, South Carolina) drove in the tying run, then the Bobcats went ahead on a wild pitch.
Price finished 3-for-3 with the RBI, while leftfielder Hannah Rogers (Marietta) had a 2-for-3 game with a run scored.
The Bobcats won the second game in more convincing fashion, rattling off 15 hits for nine runs in a run-shortened five innings.
GC Softball got two in the first on a triple from freshman Ariel Edenfield (Dublin), followed by a Haley Howell (Rochelle) single. Howell added an RBI single in the third, then posted a run-scoring double in the fourth.
Howell finished 3-for-3 with the double, three RBIs and a run. Edenfield had two doubles and a triple in four trips, scoring three times and tallying one RBI. Rogers went 2-for-3 again, scoring a run, and catcher Ellen Stone (Thomasville) added the first two hits of her career in three at-bats. The first career hit for Lindsey Puckett (Dunwoody) brought in the ninth run in the fifth, cancelling the game early by run-rule.
Sophomore lefty Rebecca Lawrence (Vidalia) benefitted from the run boost in the second game, evening her record at 1-1. Lawrence tossed all five innings, scattering three hits and two walks for a single run and adding three strikeouts. She set the Rams down in order in three of her five frames.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Feb. 8 at the Charger Chillout in Huntsville, Alabama. Georgia College takes on Union University and the University of Montevallo on day one.
