GC Cross Country Lends Helping Hand to Local Community

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.  – The Georgia College Cross Country teams volunteered at the Learning Safari Child Care and Learning Center Tuesday, interacting with youth by reading and facilitating holiday activities. The Learning Safari gives local Pre-K children opportunities for well-rounded growth and development.

“We had a blast with the kids,” said third-year head coach Steven Cary. “Seeing the kids light up when our student-athletes walking in the room was a neat experience.”

Senior Matt Sutton (Norcross) and sophomore Connor Reynolds (Peachtree City) represented the men’s team, while sophomore Maddy Howe (Dacula) and freshman Michaela Davis (Johns Creek) represented the women’s.

Sutton, a seasoned Bobcat veteran, spoke highly of the experience. “Reading at the Learning Safari was very rewarding. We could see the kids’ excitement and joy for the upcoming holiday season and it was contagious.”

Bobcat Cross Country is no stranger to the community, as they continue to reach out and give back. Each year they volunteer their time and effort in Milledgeville at various community events.

“A lot of our runners enjoy working with kids and that showed in how they interacted with the students,” said Cary. “Reading is something that many of our athletes are passionate about, so it was fun to be able to share that passion with the young people of this community.”

With both teams placing in the top-10 at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship this season, and senior Katherine Yost (Norcross) competing at the National Championship, the Bobcats continue to produce and look for more opportunities on and off the course.

The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup and the 2017 PBC Sportsmanship Institution of the Year, sponsors 11 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level.
