MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Hitting 14 three-pointers
and nabbing 22 offensive rebounds, Georgia College & State
University basketball (1-0) won both their season and home opener
tonight (Nov. 21) holding off Fort Valley State University (0-2)
107-102 at "Blue Thunder" in the Centennial Center.
Six Bobcats made it to double-figure scoring, including
team-leader Shaun Keaton
(Albany, Ga.) with 24 points on five three pointers,
adding six rebounds and six assists. Senior guard Ken Kemp (Dublin,
Ga.) chipped in a double-double with 12 points and a
career-high 13 rebounds.
Junior guard Graham Martin
(Marietta, Ga.) tallied 18 points, all in the second half,
while junior Jake Rios (Bozeman,
Mt.) and freshman forward Ryan Aquino
(Roswell, Ga.) added 13 and 11 points, respectively from
the bench. Sophomore forward Josh Hurst (Athens,
Ga.) posted a career-best 10 points in his first career
start, while junior guard Ty Rowland
(Lilburn, Ga.) ran the offense, dishing out a career-high
12 assists, one away from the school record set by Shejdie
Childs (2005-07) Feb. 17, 2007.
Eatonton native Martrez Scott made the most of his
near-homecoming for FVSU, getting a game-high 26 points, tallying
six assists and grabbing eight steals. Center Desmond Williams
added 22 points and eight boards, while Milton Meadows had 18 and
Darrell Aiken 12.
The Bobcats shot great from everywhere, hitting 49 percent
(36-73) from the field 47 percent (14-30) from three-point and 72
percent (21-29) from the line. Both teams were hot, as the Wildcats
were 57 percent (35-63) overall and 63 percent (5-8) from three.
The Bobcats held a 47-31 rebounding advantage, including 22-11
on the offensive glass. Georgia College now owns a 12-10 all-time
series advantage, and has won the last three season lid-lifters.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Nov. 28 at 8 p.m. when
they take on Carson-Newman College (1-1) at the Jameson Inn Classic
at Tusculum College. The Eagles play both the University of
Alabama-Huntsville and Milligan College before taking on the
Bobcats.
