MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Two big defensive plays in
the last 10 seconds helped Georgia College men's basketball (11-2,
5-2 PBC) hold on to a 68-67 victory tonight (Jan. 19) in the
Centennial Center.
Junior guard Graham Martin
(Marietta, Ga.) got a crucial tie-up off a missed Laker
free-throw and classmate Ty Rowland
(Lilburn, Ga.) broke up a pass and shot attempt with 1.2
seconds left to preserve the win.
Martin finished with 14 points on 4-of-8 from the floor, and
Jake
Rios (Bozeman, Mt.) added 14 off the bench on 5-of-6
shooting to lead the Bobcats to the sixth win in their last seven
games.
Down two at 68-66 in the waning seconds, Clayton State guard
Trey Goss drove the left side, getting fouled on a layup attempt.
Goss made the first free-throw, but missed the second as teammate
Freddie Williams pulled down the rebound with a chance to win the
game.
Martin grabbed the rebound with Williams, drawing the tie-up
with the possession arrow favoring the Lakers. In-bounding from the
right side of the hoop, the pass was thrown up to Will Lewis for a
tip-in attempt, but Rowland played the role of defensive back,
getting his right arm in there to knock the ball loose in mid-air.
The Bobcats won despite not knocking down a field goal in the
last 5:48. Down 13 after a jumper by Rios at the 6:58 mark, the
Lakers went on an 18-6 run over the remainder of the game.
Sophomore forward Josh Hurst (Athens,
Ga.) added a solid line of six points, seven boards and
two swats to the Bobcat effort.
GCSU sweeps the regular-season series with the Lakers this year,
the first time they've done that since the 2002-03 season. The
series now stands at 18-13 in Georgia College's favor. Clayton
State has lost their last four games this season, by a combined
score of eight points.
The Bobcats return to action Wednesday, Jan. 21 at Georgia
Southwestern State University (7-8, 3-5 PBC) for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
The Hurricanes most recently beat Columbus State University tonight
77-74.
