game two
TAMPA, Fla. -
Battling the No. 2 team in the nation, the Georgia College &
State University baseball team (1-2) dropped a doubleheader today,
by a total difference of three runs. The University of Tampa beat
the Bobcats 6-5 in 10 innings in game one, taking game two 3-1 in
regulation.
In game one, the Bobcats scored the first five runs of the game,
finding themselves up 5-0 in the fifth. Senior Derek Johns
(Waynesville, Ga.) ripped a single to score ChandlerSnell
(Loganville, Ga.) to open the scoring in the top of the
first. Snell brought in two runs of his own in the second, giving
the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
By the time Kyle Allen (Conyers,
Ga.) slashed a single to left, the Bobcats were up 5-0.
Over the next three innings, the Spartans chipped away at the lead,
tying it in the bottom of the eighth when Nick Nordgren, who had
led off with a pinch-hit double, scored on a groundout.
Nordgren later smacked a one-out home run in the bottom of the
10th for the 6-5 win. Bobcat reliever Martin Dewald
(Manheim, Germany) falls to 1-1, going 2 2/3 innings. Alex
Koronis got the win pitching the final two frames.
A three-run fourth was all the Spartans would need in game two,
a 3-1 Bobcat loss. Again the Bobcats started with the lead, when
Allen reached on an error in the third, eventually scoring on a
sacrifice fly by Johns.
The Spartans got RBI singles from Garrett Maines, Tyler Cox and
Correy Figureoa in the third for all their runs.
Tampa's Tommy Meagher tossed four innings of one-hit ball,
fanning five in the win. Max Kreuter got the three inning save.
Junior Ryan
Tabor (Lawrenceville, Ga.) went 3 2/3 in the loss
(0-1), his first start since the 2007 season, as he missed all last
year with an injury.
Johns finished the day 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run. Allen was
2-for-6 with three runs and an RBI.
The Bobcats will look to take the final game of the three-match
set tomorrow, Feb. 9 at noon.
