WILSON, N.C.
- The No. 9 Georgia College & State University
baseball squad (21-8) put up five runs in the first and added two
late in a 7-5 win at Barton College (18-12) today (March 25).
The Bobcats got five runs on four hits, a walk and an error in
their first trip to the plate. Catcher Pete Paris (Scranton,
Pa.) had a two-run double with the bases loaded, while
designated hitter Buddy Elmore
(Dallas) brought home another pair with a single in the
inning.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 4-3 with three in the third and one
more in the sixth, but shortstop ChandlerSnell
(Loganville, Ga.) led off the seventh with a single,
eventually scoring on a Derek Johns
(Waynesville, Ga.) sac fly. After a run in the bottom of
the seventh, Paris smacked a solo home run in the eighth for the
7-5 final. Paris finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Picking up the win in relief was righty Ryan Parson (Madison,
Ga.) improving to 4-0 with two no-hit innings. Junior
closer Martin Dewald
(Mannheim, Germany) added his seventh save of the season,
tossing the final two no-hit innings with three strikeouts. Barton
starter Brandon Brinson (6-2) made it just one inning in the loss.
Senior Danny McCorkell
(Wentzville, Mo.) went 2-for-5 with a run, while Elmore
had a 2-for-4 day with two RBI and a run. Snell also went 2-for-4
with a run.
Dewald's save total ties for third in a season at GCSU with
Jayson Bennett (2006) and Johnny Whited
(1994). Second place is one save away as Michael
Newman had eight in 2006 as well.
The Bulldogs scattered their seven hits, with just one multi-hit
performer in shortstop Chris Rawlings, 2-for-4 with a run. The
Bobcats are now 19-1 all-time against Barton.
This weekend, the Bobcat baseball program will honor the
40th anniversary of baseball being played at Georgia
College, bringing back the first Colonial squad from 1969 and head
coach Floyd V. Anderson.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, March 27 at 6 p.m.
hosting Lander University.
