PEMBROKE, N.C.- The Georgia College & State
University softball team (23-15, 9-1 PBC) swept Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) opponent UNC Pembroke (15-21, 5-7 PBC) 5-0 and 9-0
in back-to-back shutouts today (March 26), as Mandy
Chandler (Covington, Ga.) tossed a no-hitter in game two.
The Bobcats out-hit the Braves in game one six to three with
senior centerfielder Sherquita Bostick (Florence,
S.C.) leading the 'Cats at the plate. Bostick
recorded three RBI and one run going 2-for-3 with a double and one
home run. Senior shortstop Lindsey Swanson (Kennesaw,
Ga.) was 2-for-4 at bat scoring one run.
No surprise, senior ace Chandler did the pitching for Georgia
College in game one. The righty allowed three hits and no runs
while fanning 14 UNCP batters.
The Georgia College bats showed no sign of cooling down in game
two, posting eight hits in the 9-0 shutout. Bostick had a case of
Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, again going 2-for-3 with another
double and home run. She put up three runs and one RBI. Junior
designated player Kayla Smith (Lexington, S.C.)
recorded one run and one RBI, while senior first baseman
Tonya Medders (Bascom, Fla.) matched those
numbers. Freshman catcher Anna Parker (Columbus,
Ga.) looked strong at bat today going 2-for-4 with a
double and home run, tallying three RBI and two runs. She leads the
Bobcats in dingers this season with six.
In the circle, Chandler tossed a no hitter for the Bobcats over
six innings, sitting down four batters. The two shutouts give her
eight for the season as she improved to 20-8. The Bobcat ace now
has 1,098 career strikeouts moving into seventh place for career
whiffs in NCAA Division II history, 71 outside of sixth.
The two wins keep GCSU atop the PBC Standings, as they move two
victories ahead of North Georgia.
Georgia College is back in action Saturday, March 28 in a
conference doubleheader on the road against Francis Marion
University (23-10, 5-5 PBC), beginning at noon.
