game two
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- The No. 9 Georgia College
& State University baseball team (22-9, 9-5 PBC) split a
doubleheader with Lander University tonight (March 29) following a
4-3 loss with a 13-5 blowout win. In game two, the Bobcats swiped
10 bases and knocked three home runs.
In game one, Lander's two runs in the top of the sixth put a
back-and-forth affair to the Bearcats' side for good. GCSU plated
the first two runs of the game, then responded to a tying inning
from Lander with another run for a 3-2 lead after five. The Bobcats
couldn't get another rally in the 4-3 loss.
Outfielder Derek Johns
(Waynesville, Ga.) was 3-for-4 with two runs, while
designated hitter Buddy Elmore
(Dallas) also had a 3-for-4 day, driving in one.
Bobcat reliever Mike Tokessy (Ottowa,
Ontario) took the loss (0-1) in one inning of work,
allowing just one run on one hit. Lander starter Drew Elliott (4-2)
went 5 1/3 innings in the victory. David Glover got the final two
outs for his seventh save.
Lander's Bud Lanier exploded for two two-run home runs, one in
the fourth and another in the sixth, accounting for the entire
Lander score.
Game two was a different story, as the Bobcats scored in six of
the eight innings they batted, including a four-run eighth and a
three-run second.
Sophomore righty Eric Pettepher
(Gordon, Ga.) was aided by the run-support, improving to
4-2 with seven innings of work, fanning seven and allowing three
earned runs. Lander starter Tim Rau (4-2) made it just 2 2/3
innings in the loss.
First baseman Matt Pitts (Brunswick,
Ga.) had three stolen bases, going 3-for-4 with a home
run, three runs and three RBI. Second baseman Brooks Robinson
(Evans, Ga.) was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run, while
centerfielder Sean Harrell (Martinez,
Ga.) finished 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in one
while swiping two pillows.
Elmore added a 2-for-4 game with a run and an RBI, and catcher
Richard
Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) scored twice on a 3-for-5
effort. Third baseman Paul Bordon (Martinez,
Ga.) knocked his first Division II home run, a leadoff
solo shot in the fourth. Senior Danny McCorkell
(Wentzville, Mo.) ripped a two-run blast over the fence in
right as part of the four-run eighth.
The bottom four spots in the order combined for a 9-for-18,
scoring eight times and tallying eight RBI with two home runs.
For the Bearcats, Lanier was impressive again, going 4-for-5
with a run and RBI. He and shortstop Robert Skinner combined for a
7-for-10, scoring twice and driving in two.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, March 30 at 1 p.m. for
the final contest of the three-game set with Lander. The Bobcats
are one game behind Peach Belt Conference (PBC) leader Columbus
State University (7-4) in the loss column.
