FLORENCE, S.C. - Needing three
wins today to survive in the loser's bracket of the Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) Tournament, Georgia College & State University
softball (31-22) got a win over Lander University 7-0 then fell 6-0
to Augusta State University to end the PBC tourney run. Held at the
Freedom Florence Complex, the 2009 PBC Tournament is hosted by
Francis Marion University.
The first game couldn't have been scripted any better, as the
Bobcats rattled off seven runs on 10 hits, and senior righty
Mandy
Chandler (Covington, Ga.) struck out 12 Lander
batters, tying the PBC Tournament record.
Mandy Chandler tossed six innings, scattering seven hits over
shutout ball and not allowing a single walk.
Rightfielder Sabrina Chandler
(Covington, Ga.) drove in the first run of the game,
singling to right to break the scoreless tie. After an out,
shortstop Lindsey Swanson
(Kennesaw, Ga.) plated two runs with a triple in the
second, increasing the lead to 3-0.
Leftfielder Haley Holloway
(McIntyre, Ga.) doubled and eventually scored on a wild
pitch in the fourth, with second baseman Allison Schwimer
(Cumming, Ga.) singling and coming around to score on a
first-and-third steal. Sabrina Chandler singled home another run in
the fifth, with Sherquita
Bostick (Florence, S.C.) adding a solo home run in the
sixth, her second of the tournament.
Swanson finished 2-for-4 with the two RBI, with Sabrina Chandler
adding a 2-for-2 effort, plating a pair and scoring once.
Game two was a drastically different story, as the Bobcats
managed just two hits off Augusta State starter Emily Corish (6-1)
and three total, as Kimberly Kennedy got the final three outs for
the Jaguars. Corish had just the two hits and a pair of walks in
the six shutout innings.
A 2-0 game going into the top of the seventh, the Jaguars plated
four runs to break the game open. First team All-PBC pick Jessica
Thornton had a solo home run to left in the second inning to break
the scoreless tie. ASU's 3-4-5 hitters went a combined 5-for-11,
driving in five runs and scoring three.
The three hits were scattered for GCSU, coming in the first,
fourth and seventh innings. The Bobcats never reached third base.
Mandy Chandler (26-13) took the loss in just three innings of
work, fanning five and allowing two earned runs on three hits and a
walk.
The Bobcats, ranked No. 4 in the most recent NCAA Southeast
Region Poll, will await the selection for the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
The selections will be announced Sunday, May 3, as the Bobcats vie
for their fourth-straight trip to the NCAA tourney.
