PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Georgia College &
State University baseball team (30-13, 15-9 PBC) lost to UNC
Pembroke (35-14, 12-11 PBC) today (April 19) 16-4, completing the
series favoring the Braves 2-1.
Down 3-0 in the fourth inning, rightfielder Derek Johns
(Waynesville, Ga.) and designated hitter Buddy Elmore
(Dallas) put the Bobcats on the board with back-to-back
home runs. The Braves responded with four runs in the bottom of the
inning, three coming off of a Joe Mangum home run, and the Bobcats
never recovered.
Every time Georgia College put up runs, UNCP answered back with
multiple run-innings. In the seventh, GCSU plated a pair off of a
Pete
Paris (Scranton, Pa.) double and a Steve Muoio (Rochester,
N.Y.) single through the right side. With a 9-4 lead, the
Braves put the contest further out of reach with a seven-run
seventh inning.
Despite the 16-4 loss, the Bobcats recorded 14 hits, one shy of
Pembroke's 15. Elmore led Georgia College at bat going 3-for-4 on
the day scoring one run with one RBI. Johns had one hit, while
scoring two runs with one RBI. Brooks Robinson
(Evans, Ga.), Matt Pitts (Brunswick,
Ga.) and Chandler Snell
(Loganville, Ga.) all posted multi-hit games each going
2-for-4 at the plate.
Lefty starter Clete Jessup (Darien,
Ga.) took the loss for the Bobcats, falling to 4-3 for the
season. He gave up eight hits and three earned runs while fanning
three batters over 4.2 innings pitched. Jonathan Rivera claimed the
win for Pembroke improving to 6-1. He allowed eight hits and two
earned runs while tossing six innings with three strikeouts. Josh
Bagley snagged his first save of the season with five hits, two
earned runs and one strikeout.
The loss, combined with a USC Aiken win knocks the Bobcats out
of the top slot in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Standings.
Georgia College had been in the top spot in the conference since
the start of conference play.
The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, April 21 as they travel
to Due West, S.C. to take on Erskine College at 3 p.m.
