DUE WEST, S.C. - Much like the season-opening
6-5 win, No. 14 Georgia College & State University baseball
(31-13) needed a late rally to take a 5-4 victory at No. 26 Erskine
College (35-14). The Bobcats plated four of their five runs in the
top of the ninth to win by the slimmest of margins.
The ninth started with a walk to pinch hitter Danny McCorkell
(Wentzville, Mo.) who won the prior meeting with a
bases-loaded two-out bunt single in the ninth. After a hit-batsman
and another walk loaded the bases, junior Andrew Evans
(Milledgeville, Ga.) pinch hit and smacked a double to
left, scoring two for a 4-3 deficit.
The game's next batter, second baseman Brooks Robinson
(Evans, Ga.) gave the Bobcats the lead with a two-run
single to center. Junior closer Martin Dewald
(Mannheim, Germany) got the final three outs to pick up
his 12th save of the season, five shy of the Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) record.
Righty reliever Kyle Cravey (Cordele,
Ga.) improved to 4-0 on the season with the six-inning
win, allowing three earned runs and striking out four. Cravey
tossed three consecutive shutout innings before turning things over
to Dewald for the ninth. Flying Fleet reliever Carlton Watts (2-2)
took the loss to even his record.
Robinson finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while third
baseman Steve Muoio (Rochester,
N.Y.) also had a 2-for-4 day. For Erskine, first baseman
Matt Schnieder was 2-for-2 with a solo home run and third baseman
Mo Seay finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The Bobcats head to Benedict College tomorrow, April 22 for a 3
p.m. start. Georgia College will return home Friday, April 24 at 6
p.m. to face the University of Montevallo.
