AIKEN, S.C. -
The No. 20 Georgia College & State University baseball squad
(37-18) fell behind early and nearly caught up, dropping a 7-5
decision to No. 21 Catawba College (36-16) today (May 14) in the
NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by USC Aiken.
Catawba jumped on Georgia College early, posting four unanswered
runs over the first four innings. The Bobcats cut the lead to one
at 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't get any closer.
Third baseman Steve Muoio (Rochester,
N.Y.) drove in both runs in the seventh on a single,
plating both Buddy Elmore
(Dallas) and Richard Pirkle
(Norcross, Ga.). Muoio finished 2-for-5 with the two RBI,
Elmore scored twice on a 1-for-2 day with a pair of walks.
Shortstop ChandlerSnell
(Loganville, Ga.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the
fourth, scoring once. Third baseman Matt Pitts (Brunswick,
Ga.) had two singles (2-4) and scored a run. Georgia
College left 10 runners on base. The bottom four spots of the order
was excellent, going 7-for-17 with four RBI and three runs.
Catawba starter Tim Holmes (7-2) went 6 1/3 innings with four
earned runs, scattering chances for the Bobcats. Nathan Furr got
the last four outs for his eighth save. Bobcat starter Dylan Lightell
(Rosamond, Calif.) fell to 4-6 on the year going just two
innings, allowing three runs and six hits.
"We just didn't have it pitching today," said head coach
Tom
Carty. "They had runners on in each of the nine
innings. We can't do that and be successful."
Powering the Catawba offense was the top of the order, as
1-through-4 went 11-for-18 with three RBI and five runs. Leadoff
hitter Craige Lyerly was 3-for-6 with three runs.
The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow, May 15 at 3 p.m. to
take on the winner of the USC Aiken/Belmont Abbey College game set
for 7 p.m. tonight.
