AIKEN, S.C. - Coughing up a season-high seven
errors, the No. 17 Georgia College & State University baseball
squad (37-17) fell 15-6 to No. 29 UNC Pembroke (37-16) today (May
9) in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament
hosted by USC Aiken. The Bobcats are now out of the
single-elimination tourney.
UNCP blew a tight 4-3 game open with late fireworks, out-scoring
GCSU in the final three frames 11-3.
Junior starter Dylan Lightell
(Rosamond, Calif.) took the loss (4-5), going 5 2/3
innings with four unearned runs. He fanned three, walked one and
allowed four hits. PBC Pitcher of the Year Matt McGovern went six
innings, improving to 9-0 on the year while fanning five and
allowing two earned runs. Reliever Ryan Kirkman went the final
three innings for the save, his 10th.
For the Bobcat offense, All-PBC centerfielder Sean Harrell (Martinez,
Ga.) was 3-for-4, scoring once. Third baseman Steve Muoio
(Rochester, N.Y.) had an RBI double, going 2-for-4 with an
RBI and a run. All-PBC second baseman Brooks Robinson
(Evans, Ga.) also had a double, going 2-for-4.
UNCP pounded out 15 hits, with just three going for extra bases.
All-PBC second baseman Jason Coker of UNCP was 3-for-5, driving in
four and scoring three times.
The Bobcats now await selection for the NCAA Southeast Region
Tournament, set for May 14-17 at a site to be determined. The
Bobcats, who were No. 3 in the most recent region poll, will have
to hope for one of the three at-large bids to the tournament, which
should be announced sometime in the next coming days.
