GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Georgia
College & State University men's basketball team (8-2, 1-0 PBC)
started the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) schedule with a victory
tonight, drubbing Lander University (5-6, 0-3 PBC) 74-58.
The Bobcats took the lead for good at the 8:16 mark in the first
half on a jumper by Trent Fildes
(Adelaide, Australia), two of his seven points, and would
never look back thanks to strong defense and rebounding prowess.
Georgia College allowed just 34 percent (22-64) shooting from the
floor, and out-rebounded the Bearcats 42-36. Josh Hurst (Athens,
Ga.) led a balanced effort on the glass with eight
rebounds.
Senior guard Graham Martin
(Marietta, Ga.) led all scorers with 17 points, ripping
five boards with four assists. The Preseason All-PBC selection has
led GCSU in scoring five times, and has scored in double-digits for
all 10 games this season.
The two-headed point guard duo of Ty Rowland (Lilburn,
Ga.) and Andre Mikell
(Snellville, Ga.) had 11 points each, Rowland adding a
game-high seven assists. Center Robert Thomas
(Mankato, Minn.) snuck into double-digit scoring with 10
points, thanks in large part to a 6-of-7 effort from the free-throw
line.
The Bobcats made 11 threes, shooting at an impressive 55 percent
clip against a team that allowed just 35 percent from long distance
coming into the game.
Lander got 16 points from Dane Sparrow to lead the way, aided by
14 points with six rebounds from Tovi Bailey.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
traveling to Clayton State University (7-4, 1-1 PBC). The Lakers
most recently beat Rollins College 62-60 Dec. 30.
