MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College
& State University softball team (13-32, 5-15 PBC) came to the
same fate as any other playing No. 1 North Georgia (39-0, 18-0 PBC)
this season, coming out on the losing end of a doubleheader by
dropping game one 8-1 and game two 5-0 at the Peeler Complex
Saturday.
With the Bobcats down just 2-0 in the early going, it took until
the fifth inning for the Saints to break game one open, putting
four on the board in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Georgia College got their lone run of the day in the fifth, when
singles by Jessica
Solomon (Douglasville, Ga.) and Kati
Pickowitz (Keller, Texas) set up pinch runner
Bailey Thompson (Vidalia, Ga.) to score
on a Saint error.
Senior Allison Schwimer (Cumming, Ga.) went 2-for-3
with a pair of singles as the 'Cats were out-hit 11-5.
Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) started and took
the loss (9-16) in four innings of work. Sarah Phillips went the
distance for the Saints, fanning seven. Third baseman Hilary Cox
went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
Game two was more of the same, as the 'Cats kept it close
until the late innings. Again only up 2-0, the Saints tacked on
three runs in the seventh for insurance. The Bobcats were out-hit
in game two 13-4 in game two, with Burnett getting half of the hits
on a 2-for-2 game.
Freshman Kristi
Rodriguez (Marietta, Ga.) fell to 3-9 with the loss,
going 6 1/3 innings with five earned runs, while Phillips improved
to 32-0 on the year with a complete game shutout, fanning five.
Second baseman Laura Voyles went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run,
swatting a double.
The game marks the final regular-season contest for the Bobcats
as they await the selection announcement for the Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) Tournament.
