MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – On a night honoring
the back-to-back NAIA World Series teams from 1984 and 1985, the
No. 16 Georgia College & State University baseball team (21-10,
10-3 PBC) played like a high-level program, toppling No. 30 Georgia
Southwestern State University (19-9, 8-5 PBC) 14-5 Friday at John
Kurtz Field.
Rightfielder Shawn Ward
(Martinez, Ga.) had a series in a day, going 3-for-3 with
two home runs and six RBI. The junior had 10 total bases on his
three hits.
The Bobcats benefitted from the big inning, putting four on the
board in the first, three in the third and five in the fifth.
Centerfielder Sean
Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) was 3-for-4 with three runs
and an RBI, while leftfielder Kyle Allen
(Conyers, Ga.) hit 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. The
starting outfielders for the Bobcats went a combined 8-for-11 with
nine RBI, two home runs and seven runs.
Second baseman Jason
Veyna (Lamar, Colo.) had a 2-for-3 day with two runs
and an RBI, as Steve
Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.) added a 2-for-2 effort,
driving in a pair and scoring once.
Junior lefty Jason
Nicholas (Wright City, Mo.) picked up the win (2-1)
tossing the six innings, allowing four runs and fanning four.
Junior Ryan Parson (Madison, Ga.) tossed the
final three frames for his second save.
Jody Sellars (5-2) suffered the loss for the Hurricanes, going 2
1/3 innings allowing six earned runs. Leadoff hitter Bud Long was
2-for-4 with a solo home run.
The Bobcats and Hurricanes square off again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
with a doubleheader.
