MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – In a game that saw a
combined 27 hits and 24 runs, the No. 8 Georgia College & State
University baseball team (33-13) landed a little short of No. 20
Erskine College (39-14) 14-10 Wednesday night.
The Flying Fleet jetted out to an 8-0 lead by the end of the
fourth inning, but the Georgia College bats came alive and got as
close as two at 11-9 going into the eighth.
In the fifth inning, the Bobcats put two runs on the scoreboard
when Kyle Allen (Conyers, Ga.) hit a two-run blast
with ChandlerSnell
(Loganville, Ga.) on base. The home run was number six on
the season for the senior leftfielder.
The 'Cats continued to claw their way back into the game,
hitting two more two-run home runs in the bottom of the sixth when
the “Killer P's” struck gold. Matt Pitts
(Brunswick, Ga.) and Richard
Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) both hit two-run round
trippers. Pitts hit his 11th of the season, while Pirkle hit his
14th.
In the seventh inning, Pitts recorded his third RBI when he
doubled to leftfield to bring Sean
Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) across the plate. Pitts and
Shawn Ward (Martinez, Ga.) both scored on a
single by Pirkle. Georgia College got one more run in the eighth as
Ward hit a single through the left side to score Snell, his second
run of the game.
Erskine had four innings where they scored at least three runs
and the Bobcats had to play catch-up all night, unable to overcome
the early deficit.
Ward led the team going 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs
scored. Pitts and Pirkle both had three RBI, while Allen knocked in
two.
Chas Anthony led the Flying Fleet going a perfect 4-for-4 on the
day with two RBI and three runs scored as John Bolding led his team
with four RBI. William Buzhardt improved to 13-2 on the season for
Erskine getting the win.
Lefty Matt Kaplan (Alpharetta, Ga.) started
the game for Georgia College and was credited with the loss,
dropping to 4-2 on the season in just two innings of work.
The loss closes out the home portion of the 2010 season for
Georgia College baseball, a year where the Bobcats went 20-8.
The Bobcats head to Savannah, Ga. to play Armstrong Atlantic
State University Friday, April 30 at 3 p.m. The regular season
finale will be a doubleheader Saturday, May 1 against the Pirates,
starting at 1 p.m.
