MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – With a combined 35
runs on 39 hits over two games, the No. 16 Georgia College &
State University baseball team (23-10, 12-3 PBC) swept a
doubleheader from No. 30 Georgia Southwestern State University
(19-11, 8-7 PBC) 16-12 and 19-8 Saturday at John Kurtz Field. The
two wins give the Bobcats a 3-0 sweep of the season series with the
Hurricanes as well.
Game one was a slugfest, as the teams combined for 28 hits and
28 runs.
Centerfielder Sean
Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) was 4-for-4 with four runs and
four RBI, including a three-run home run in the Georgia College
nine-run first inning. Designated hitter Steve
Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.) followed that up with a
2-for-3 effort and three RBI with two runs in the third slot.
Shortstop ChandlerSnell
(Loganville, Ga.) had three hits in five trips, scoring
twice and driving in one, while Shawn Ward
(Martinez, Ga.) and Brett
George (Dacula, Ga.) had two hits apiece, Ward plating
two runs and George one.
Bobcat reliever Ryan
Haynie (Fayetteville, Ga.) picked up the win (2-0) in
four innings of work, allowing just a single run on four hits while
fanning three. Senior lefty Ryan Tabor
(Lawrencevile, Ga.) got his team-best third save with a
hitless 1 2/3 innings, striking out four.
For the Hurricanes, Ryan Lackey (2-3) got the loss, not making
it out of the first inning. The hitting star was first baseman
Jared Allen, going 3-for-5 with seven RBI.
The Bobcat bats didn't heat up until late in game two,
when finding themselves down 5-1 the 'Cats went on a 14-0 run
over the third-through-sixth innings.
Sophomore catcher BentonYaun
(Marietta, Ga.) had the hottest aluminum in game two,
going 5-for-6 with two doubles, scoring four times and driving in
one. Muoio was 4-for-6, scoring five times and driving in one. Also
4-for-6 was George, scoring three times with one RBI.
Leftfielder Kyle Allen
(Conyers, Ga.) was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while
second baseman Jason
Veyna (Lamar, Colo.) had two hits in four trips,
knocking in three runs. Harrell and first baseman Matt Pitts
(Brunswick, Ga.) had two hits each, also each blasting
home runs to center.
Senior righthander Brendon
Malkowski (Schenectady, N.Y.) entered in the third
with two out, going the distance for the victory (5-1). He allowed
just two earned runs and fanned three.
GSW starter Tyler Daniel (2-5) took the loss, allowing eight
runs in three innings. Bud Long provided the scoring punch for the
Hurricanes in game two, going 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs,
including a three-run home run.
The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, April 6 at 5 p.m.,
playing at Anderson University.
